Empowering Indigenous Youth through Education

Traditional Owner groups in the Kimberley region and the Northern Territory have highlighted the need for educational pathways to jobs, with tertiary scholarships being a priority.

The program is delivered by MADALAH, a not-for-profit organisation that offers secondary and tertiary scholarships, and is supported by Shell Australia and its joint venture partners for the Prelude FLNG facility. The program will offer the equivalent of 10 full-time tertiary scholarships, providing up to $10,000 per annum for full-time study, or a pro-rata amount for part-time study. Participants will also receive support and mentoring during their studies.

In the remote coastal town of Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory, Damien Djerrkura leads one of Australia's most dynamic Aboriginal-owned businesses, the North East Arnhem Land Aboriginal Corporation (NEALAC).

Awarded the 2025 Blak Business of the Year by the Northern Territory Indigenous Business Network (NTIBN), NEALAC is a model of Indigenous-led development. For Djerrkura, who started working with the organisation as a teenager, the role is personal. "My father was general manager here in the '90s," he said. "I used to come back on school holidays and work at YBE (a charitable fund operated by NEALAC). There's a lot of family history."

This important research aims to demonstrate how Indigenous businesses contribute to the NT economy, generate employment, strengthen communities, and create lasting social and cultural value for Indigenous people and the wider Territory.

Indigenous chambers have launched NIBCA—an Indigenous-led, locally verified national registry to strengthen certification integrity, curb Black cladding, and better support First Nations businesses.

Indigenous business chambers from across the country met in Redfern Wednesday to establish the National Indigenous Business Chambers Alliance (NIBCA).
